The Humanitarian Shelter Tools

As part of our Healthy Housing for the Displaced project and other work, we have some created tools and information to help with the design and evaluation of shelters for refugees and other displaced people. These tools have been used to aid shelter delivery in many parts of the world.

The Shelter Assessment Matrix (SAM) is a scoring mechanism for shelter design. It tries to make sure commonly forgotten issues aren’t forgotten, then gives a rational way to assess the potential performance of a shelter – including social issues (see below for more details). It also contains a library of useful information on shelter design.

ShelTherm is a simple thermal model designed for those with little buildings or modelling experience. It allows you to build your shelter in a user friendly way, place it in the correct climate and then look at the likely internal temperatures on a hot day and a cold day. 

SheltAir is a Excel-based airflow simulation tool created for those with little buildings or modelling experience. It is an Excel-based tool that employs simplified airflow equations to model natural ventilation and IAQ. It also implements a COVID-19 transmission model. 

Research papers. These show the validation behind the tools together with much other research by the team, but also provide a useful primer on various topics and a rapid upskilling for those thinking of doing research by physical measurement or social survey in refugee camps or similar settings.

SheltAir

SheltAir is the first simulation tool created using a co-creation approach, involving those for whom it is intended. The development included participation from a diverse group of stakeholders, including shelter designers, humanitarian workers, and academics from 15 different countries. SheltAir is an Excel-based tool that employs simplified airflow equations to model natural ventilation and IAQ. The tool also implements a COVID-19 transmission model.
